We approach restaurant airflow through precise pressure differentials, ensuring safe exhaust operation and comfortable dining environments.
Rapid diagnostics for gas ignition failures, burner cleaning, motor belt replacement, seized actuator motors, and interlock faults causing total system shutdown.
Technicians trace building air pressure imbalances that cause doors to slam, difficult door opening, cold drafts, or kitchen odors drifting into dining spaces.
Verifying necessary interlocks between exhaust hoods and makeup air units are fully operational, ensuring TSSA safety code and fire compliance.
Customized maintenance plans covering high-volume MERV filter changes, belt tensioning, burner manifold testing, actuator calibration, and full TSSA combustion checks.
How we diagnose and optimize the complex interaction between kitchen exhaust and necessary makeup air.
A licensed technician uses digital monometers to measure static pressure in the kitchen, dining room, and entryways to determine positive/negative imbalances.
We inspect the exhaust fan RPM, belt condition, and hood interlock functionality against the gas-fired makeup air unit's ignition and actuator operation.
Technicians calibrate supply/exhaust airflow rates and adjust internal dampers to achieve the ideal building pressure differential (slightly negative kitchen, slightly positive dining).
Final system check, burner manifold pressure adjustment, and TSSA heat exchanger verification to ensure safe operation during high-turnover service.

Common questions restaurant managers and owners ask about makeup air unit repairs and building pressure.
This is almost always a building pressure imbalance known as negative pressure. Your commercial exhaust hood is removing more air than the makeup air unit (MAU) is supplying, sucking air (and grease/odors) from the kitchen into the lower-pressure dining area. A balanced system requires the MAU to supply roughly 80% to 90% of the exhausted air volume.
Difficult door operation is the classic symptom of significant negative or positive building pressure. If the door is hard to pull open but slams shut, your makeup air unit is failing to supply enough fresh air, creating a vacuum that resists the door movement. This forces exhaust fans to overwork and allows unconditioned outside air to leak in, raising energy bills.
In Ontario, MAUs are typically gas-fired. If yours is blowing cold air, the gas burner isn’t igniting. This can be caused by a faulty flame sensor, a failed hot surface igniter, low gas pressure, or, most commonly, a faulty high-limit safety switch tripping because the unit is overheating from restricted airflow due to dirty filters.
Due to high volumes of grease, smoke, and continuous operation, restaurant MAUs require severe-duty maintenance. We recommend quarterly (four times per year) preventative service, including filter replacement, belt inspection, burner cleaning, TSSA safety checks, and economizer/actuator calibration to prevent costly interlock failures.
Yes, absolutely. Modern commercial kitchen hood interlocks require both the exhaust fan and makeup air unit to be operational before gas valves to appliances will open. A faulty actuator or motor on the MAU will prevent the interlock from confirming airflow, shutting down the entire kitchen. When we repair an MAU, we also verify the interlock compliance.
